Great beer, great cause!

I just received this press release, and I wanted to share it with you all, so, here is a copy of the release.

If you have any more questions about this, drop me a line, and I will do what I get to get them answered for you.

The Pints for Pennies Fundraiser

The Pints for Pennies Fundraiser, benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley to launch, May 12-18, 2014

Phoenix, AZ (May1, 2014) — With a goal to collectively sell 10,000 pints of beer, five east valley breweries are teaming up during American Craft Beer Week to raise awareness and money to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley.  Participating breweries include SanTan Brewing, Arizona Wilderness, The Perch, Huss Brewing & Desert Eagle Brewery.

American Craft Beer Week runs for one week each May, this year it’s from May 12-18. This is a time of celebration among brewers and beer lovers across the country; it’s an exciting time for brewers to express unified enthusiasm and to demonstrate craft beer camaraderie through collaborations. In 2013, breweries in all 50 states organized a total of 1,269 events in celebration of American Craft Beer Week – that’s a lot of beer celebrating!

“Breweries are supported by their communities; they’re an extension of the people who support them. The Boys & Girls Clubs represent the community and their efforts change the lives of the children that will one day be the leaders of our communities. For us at Arizona Wilderness, it’s a no brainer to support them,” said Jonathan Buford, owner and brewer at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company.

During American Craft Beer Week, May 12-18, 2014, anytime patrons purchase a pint of beer, the breweries will donate a penny. It’s that simple. So, be sure to stop by one or all of the participating breweries and raise a glass to Arizona craft beer, community and philanthropy.

About the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley
Many children have no adult supervision after school. Studies have shown that the hours between 3 and 8 p.m. are the hours that most kids are likely to get involved with crimes, be victims of crime or engage in other risky behavior. The Boys & Girls Clubs provide an alternative to the dangers of the street with stimulating activities that help build character, self-esteem, values and skills. Visit www.clubzona.org for more information about the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley.

Again, if you have any questions, drop me a line, and I will get you the answers you are looking for!

Thanks!

Until next time

Yeah, you read that correctly! I will be appearing at Comicon, along with my good friends at Maskerpiece Theatre! I will be taking part in a panel discussion on the first night of Comicon. Come check it out, it should be a ton of fun, and a great place to do some people watching! Check out the info here...

Drinkinaz Beer Podcast

There is a new podcast in Arizona for beer lovers. Its called Drinkinaz. George Lindbloom hosts the podcast, so listen in as he takes you through interviews, news, fun specials features and more. I was lucky enough to be invited to sit in and join George and his crew as we chatted about the craft beer buddle, and talked with the guys from Grand Canyon Brewing. We also got to chat with Brett Haertl, the rep. for one of the newest brewerys available here in Arizona, Hanger 24! Check out Drinkinaz's site here, to check out previous episodes, as well as other helpful information. I will be posting links to the episode I appeared on as soon as they are up!! Check them out!

Portable Kegs?
I normally like to feature a cool new product on SLIF. This week, I was made aware of this little gem. A friend informed me he has just ordered one, and should be arriving today! So, I haven't been able to review it yet, but the idea looks intriguing to say the least. Anyone tried one of these "tap it caps"? It basically turns your growler into a little mini keg of sorts. The idea seems like a no brainer. Check the site out here (they have other products as well). If you have use one of these in the past, please, let me know what you thought/think of it. I might just be ordering one soon.....product runs $45.

Speaking of Podcasts.....
Masked Blogster with The Beer Czar

I appeared on the latest installment of Maskerpiece Theatre this week. The episode just posted this morning, check it out here. Masked Blogster and I talk about the beer of the week, La Fin de Monde, other great summer beers; weird things we've seen in public bathrooms; Captain America, Winter Soldier, and Agents of Shield; and we discuss ideas just as brewing a beer live on air, and making a beer trip to New Mexico (and was able to slip in a shout out to my friends at Craft Brewed Clothing!)

So, there you have it folks, this weeks SLIF! So, grab your favorite beers, settle in, and get your weekend going right!

As always, have fun, but remember to be smart, and safe, be responsible.

Until next time

S.L.I.F. Vol XI

Well, here we are again, the weekend is upon us, and, well, its a big weekend coming up folks! Lots going on, so, lets not mess around, lets get right to it! So, here you are folks, SLIF, Vol. XI.

Arizona Beer Week starts tomorrow!
A big week for us beer lovers in Arizona. Tomorrow, The Strong Beer Festival is going to be held in Phoenix. Not only is this probably the most anticipated, best beer festival Arizona has to offer, it also marks the kick off Arizona Beer Week. As the name implies, this is a week long celebration of Arizona's growing and maturing beer scene. For complete news and events listings, go to their website here, and make your plans, there is just way too much going on to list here, so check out the website. You will find something!

Arizona Wilderness Brewery, in the news, AGAIN!
The beards at Arizona Wilderness Brewery have really set the Arizona beer scene on its head! As a result of being voted "best new brewery in the world" by Ratebeer.com, they have been pulled in all directions, getting calls from breweries far and wide, looking to collaborate. I know I say it a lot, but these guys are at the top of my favorite people in Arizona beer list. Their passion and personalities are infections, and the accolades they are getting are very well deserved. Its nice to see great things happening to better people! Check out their appearance on 12 News just this morning. Its a great look into the minds of these bearded beer geniuses.....check it out here....

Finally, The Perch is set to open!
After many delays, and set backs, The Perch Pub, a new Nano Brewery and restaurant will be opening its doors to the public tonight. My friend James Swann and crew will be welcoming the public, tonight, starting at 5:00. For a great look into the Perch, and a little of their back story, check out this write up in Mouth by Southwest.

Just note, tonight and tomorrow, are a soft opening. This is their first time opening their doors to the public. There staff is all new, their processes, and systems are all new, and the crowds are expected to be quite large. Don't go tonight expecting a perfect, wonderful experience, there will be some growing pains. Now, I have all the faith in the world that James and the gang will have a first class operation, but we need to give them some time to learn. So, that being said, hope to see you at the perch this weekend!!!

Blues Traveler coming to Great American BBQ and Beer Festival!!
This years Great American BBQ and Beer festival will have a major act if you needed some other reason to attend besides the amazing BBQ and awesome beer! One of my all time favorites, Blues Traveler will be headlining the concert!! This is VERY exciting news for me, and you can bet I will be there!!! For all the info you may need, check out the website here.....

Beer Cutlery!
I want to thank Adam (my cousin in law?) for this one. Its a kick started campaign to fund some awesome new flatware that every beer lover will want! Great idea, and you can even be a part of it if you like it that much, 40 days to go (62% to goal!)!! Check it out here.....

So, there you have it folks, have a GREAT long weekend. Enjoy the start of Arizona beer week. And remember, when you are out and about enjoying all the great beer this state has to offer for Arizona Beer Week, be smart, be safe, and plan ahead, DO NOT drive.

Until next time

S.L.I.F. Vol. X!!!

Wow, 3 weeks of SLIF in a row! I hope that's a good thing! Well, its been a GREAT week for Arizona beer, and a lot is happening else where too, so, lets get right to it shall we, I present to you, for your approval, this week in SLIF, Volume X!

Best new Brewery in the World goes too.........
Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.! Like I said, it was a great week for Arizona beer, and most specifically, my friends at Arizona Wilderness, Jon, Brett and Patrick were voted the best new brewery on the planet by Ratebeer.com. Beating out all new breweries from around the world. Us here in Arizona couldn't be more happy, or more proud of these guys! They even made the local news, check I out below, and PLEASE, if you haven't been there yet, by all means, do yourself a favor, and go, you really have NO excuse now.....

http://www.myfoxphoenix.com" title="FOX 10 News - Phoenix, AZ | KSAZ-TV">FOX 10 News - Phoenix, AZ | KSAZ-TV
(Jon Hook even compares Jon to Steve Jobs???? Not bad company)

Amazing new map of Craft Beer in America.
The good folks at Frist We Feast did an amazing craft beer map of the United States, listing every brewery on a map. Sadly, this map is almost out of date as soon as it was published, since new brewerys are opening up every day, but still, it has almost all of the breweries, and where, it is awesome, check it out here.......

New Castle 'not' Super Bowl Ad
Anna Kendrick (Maine native by the way!) has a pretty funny "sort of" Super Bowl ad online for New Castle. I am sure you have already seen Budweiser's latest attempt at emotional exploitation with their new dog and horse, best buds commercial "Puppy Love", so I am not even going to post a link to it....(ok, I lied, so its a great ad, if you haven't seen it, check it out here....). Well, a Super Bowl ad came out (how is it a Super Bowl ad if it comes out a week before the Super Bowl?) for New Castle, that is, well, I think its really funny, check it out. (yeah, I think she is "beer girl" hot...)

Update...It's been grounded!
File this under the "it was fun while it lasted" Dept. Earlier this week, I posted a video of a brewery delivering beer via aerial drone, and, well, frankly, we here at The Beer Czar thought it was awesome (if you haven't seen it, check it out here.....). Well, it took the government all of a few days to crash (pun intended) all the fun. Seems this delivery method is not legal yet (yet!) and sent the brewery a 74 page letter explaining why (I am sure that is exciting reading...). Check out the full write up here....

So, there you have it. All this weeks happening wrapped up in one nice little package. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, check out our latest edition of "Friends and Fans Photos, Winter Beer Edition". Its a lot of fun!

Enjoy your weekend folks, be smart, and safe.

Until next time

S.L.I.F. (Vol. III)

Well, we made it to another weekend (almost), so here without further ado, is this weeks installment of SLIF!

Government Shut down bad for beer???
I try to avoid getting political on this blog, but there are somethings that you just can't ignore, right now, that is the Government (kind of) Shutdown. See, the government is really not totally shut down, they just shut down the things we actually need and enjoy (i.e. National Parks, various licensing agency's) to make it hurt, all while leaving open things THEY use and enjoy (i.e. Congressional Gym, THEIR paychecks etc.) One of the victims of this nonsense is the craft brewing industry. Existing brewery's can't get seasonal label or recipe approval, while brewery's in waiting can't get licencees approved, and can't move forward with their construction or openings. It hit home here in the valley for a brewery (hopefully) coming soon to downtown Phoenix, Mother Bunch Brewing. Check out the story on KPHO 5 here..

CBS 5 - KPHO

What can I do about it?
This is pretty funny!
What can you do about this idiocy? Realistically, very little. We can vote for new members of congress,
president etc, but we all know 90% of these ass clowns are going to get reelect, so what can we do? The answer? Drunk dial them!! It doesn't do much, but its funny, and might make you feel a little better.
Drunk dial a Congressmen here......

Now you want to get away.....
I know, its frustrating, and now you want to get away for a little vacation, with some great beer. Wel here is a list of 10 Luxury Beer Vacations for you to dream about, and if you lucky, book!

10 Pumpkin Beers, with 10 Pumpkin Beer recipes!
OK, I've talked a lot about pumpkin beers, but if you still can't find one, here is a list of a few more, but better yet, it also includes pumpkin beer recipes! (for cooking with pumpkin beers, not for brewing it)

Been a while since we mentioned Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co......
So, here you go, they are getting a PATIO! If you haven't been to AWB yet, lets just say, you need to go. I haven't had anything to eat there yet, but will soon, and their beer is amazing! They are getting well deserved rave reviews, and every week, they are announcing some amazing new beer they are dreaming up (if you don't follow them on Facebook, you should, keep up to date with them, go like them on their page here...)
Anyway, check it out, they are getting a patio, in a few weeks, we will be able to enjoy their beers alfresco!

Great American Beer Festival
For those of you that don't know, the GABF is going on right now. I found a slide show from Draftmag of day one, so check out whats going on up in Denver this weekend, check it out here....

So, here's to another weekend!! What are you drinking this weekend? Whatever it is, remember, drink good beer, with great people (it makes it taste better!)

Until next time

Construction on World of Beer - Gilbert starts next week!!! Won't be long now!

Arizona Wilderness Brewing is having their grand opening this Monday, the 2nd. 11-close!! Just a tip, if you want to get a growler filled, you will need to bring your own, they ran out of their own branded growlers earlier this week. Good news, bring an extra $12 and get yourself an AZ Wilderness hat, while supplies last (which I am assuming won't be long!)

There is your news for the week!

Beer is flowing in the Wilderness!!!

Tap Handles
Estralla Pale
Last night, I was lucky enough to stop by Arizona Wilderness Brewing,
as they opened their doors to the public for the very first time! After what seemed like years (just to me, I can't imagine how long it must have felt for Jonathan, and his crew!) I was able to walk into their pub, and order up a pint of beer, brewed right here in my adopted hometown of Gilbert Arizona! It was a sort of "soft" opening, with 3 of their beers on tap. Their Little Guy Rye, which I had, and was refreshing, very enjoyable, and very drinkable. My wife had their Sedona Secret Red, and I got a taster of their Estralla Pale Ale, a smooth, insanely drinkable session pale, that goes down smooth and easy, even after several, I can imagine.

My first AWB!

They were opened from 3-9, but my wife and I didn't get there till about 8:30, but it was still a virtual who's who of the valley beer scene, and what I was told, we missed most of the crowd! James and Andrew from The Perch were there (pretty much all day from what I was told) Ian from Ground Control, even ran into Anthony from San Tan, all their offering up there support, and well wishes for the guys at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co.
Its been a long time coming for these guys. They dealt with set backs, and road blocks all along the way, but thanks to their passion and persistence (and maybe even some stubbornness) they plowed forward, and managed to finally get their doors opened last night.

If you are in the area of Arizona Ave and Guadalupe (yes, that is Gilbert!) check them out on the SE
Corner (behind the bagel shop). You would be hard pressed to find a nicer bunch of guys pouring beer in the valley. They brew up some great beers, and have an awesome, comfortable place to sit and enjoy them. So, please, stop by, introduce yourself, I guarantee you, you will want to come back, again and again.

They will be having a Grand Opening Celebration coming up next week, Labor Day, Sept 2nd. They will have a few more beers on tap as well!! The party starts at 11, and ends when they kick you out!

So please, join me, in giving Jonathon, Brett, Patrick
and the rest of the bunch at Arizona Wilderness a heart felt congratulations on all their hard word, and on their dream coming to fruition. Its well worth the stop, trust me!

Congrats guys, you've certainly earned it!

Heros 19 in the Valley this weekend!

AWB's new logo
First off, let me say, hello, remember me? Yes, sorry, things in the life of the Beer Czar have been fairly  hectic, and busy this summer, and I feel I have been neglecting the blog as of late. Well, let me assure, the next few weeks, and months, things in the Arizona beer community are going to get very exciting, and I am still going to bring the latest and greatest news of it all! In the coming weeks, we have a couple of new brewery's opening their doors (Huss Brewing in Tempe, and YES, finally Arizona Wilderness Brewing in Gilbert will be opening its doors
The Perch
Sept 2nd!!!) as well as James Swann's new adventure "The Perch" will be opening in downtown Chandler in Oct. San Tan has a new seasonal coming out in Sept (Super Monk Belgian IPA, I'll have more ont hat very soon as well), and well the list seems to go on and on. These are exciting times my friends, so stay tuned for more specifics on the events I just mentioned.

I can think on better way to kick off all this great news then this, its finally here folks! The collaborative brew Heros 19, brewed by the Arizona Brewers Guild at Prescott Brewing's brewing facility in Prescott, this is the beer they brewed up with 19 types of hops, and a 19 on the color scale (SRM's for you folks that speak "beer geek") to honor the 19 fire fighters that gave their lives fighting the fire in Yarnell just over a month ago. It was tapped first at Prescott Brewing this passed week, and this weekend, makes it way to the valley.
Check out any valley brew pub this weekend (click here for a look at all the members of the Brewer's Guild). There is a special event in Downtown Chandler tomorrow, meant to honor and thank all fire fighter. Its from 11 to 2. So swing by, shake a fireman's hand, say thank you, and grab a pint of two of Hero's 19 (100% of the proceeds for this beer go to support the families of the fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots crew by the way!).

Here is what the brewery said about the brew...
"Heroes 19 is an American Brown Ale that's a little lighter in color than a regular brown ale. This beer starts with a slight malty nose with a definite hop aroma, light brown in color. Taste wise you'll notice a light toasty character followed by a hint of caramel with a pronounced hop flavor and a nice lingering hop bitterness.
It was brewed on July 19th. It has a color of 19 SRM (geek talk...), and was brewed with 19 different hops, all donated by individual Guild members. The malt was donated by Briess Malting Co. and the distribution and warehousing is being done, gratis, by Hensley."

If you would like to grab a pint, but aren't sure where to find it, feel free to hit me up at thebeerczar@gmail.com and I will be happy to point you in the right direction!

Again, stay tuned for more upcoming events here in the east valley, lots going on! What a great way to end the summer!

A good time for a great cause...

Just wanted to take a little time, and thank everyone that took part in, showed up at, and gave at the "Guns and Hoses Charity Hockey Game" yesterday at Polar Ice in Gilbert. The game, between local Police, and Firemen was held to raise money for the 100 Club of Arizona, and organization that raises money and support for the families of fallen and injured Fire fighters. A great cause that has recently been thrust into the spot light as a result of the tragic events that took place recently on Yarnell Hill.
The event, that not only consisted of a hockey game.

Basket full of beer!
There was also a gift basket raffle, that by the time the event started consisted of around 25 gift baskets, containing everything from a Samsung Galaxy Note tab, brand new high end gas grill, wine, D-backs tickets, and even a basket full of local beer (I donate the basket, with the help of a few local breweries and businesses, I will get to that in a minute). There was also a table set for the 100 Club, and a fire truck parked out front for the kids to climb around on.

All in all, it was a great event, and really fun time. The raffle raised about $3000 (my Beer Czar basket got
about 210 ticket, at $2 a piece, that means my basket alone raised about $420!!!). Total, the event raised about $8,500 to the 100 Club! From loose change in the bottoms of peoples pockets, to a check for $214 donated by a couple of young ladies that held a car wash that morning to raise funds, every bit of the money raised goes directly to the 100 Club, and victims families, so for that, I say thanks, and I am pretty sure I can speak for all involved, when I say your time, and generosity are not only appreciates, but needed, and for that, we offer up our heart felt thanks!
In particular, I would like to thank a few local companies that contributed to the beer basket I donated. San Tan Brewing Co. of Chandler, for their donation of a verity six pack (including 2 cans of Mr Pineapple!!!). Sleepy Dog Pub and Bistro in Gilbert, for their contribution of a couple of t-shirts, and some stickers. The fine folks at Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. for the addition of a couple of patches, a couple of their popular stickers, and even an AWB growler!! Last but most certainly not least, I want to thank Jon "Hoppymoto" of Arizona Brewery Tours, for the addition of a couple of t-shirts, and two pint glasses.
Congrats Lisa!!!
And I would be remiss if I failed to congratulate Lisa, for winning the basket, I hope you enjoy it!!!

Thanks again everyone, it was a great time, for a great cause!

A look at "The AmeriCAN Canned Beer Festival"

OK, I am going to try and keep this as brief as I can. However, given my penchant to ramble on and on when I get excited, this might be tough! Anyone that attended the 3rd Annual AmeriCAn Canned Beer Festival this passed weekend, will now why I am excited. In a word, it was awesome! OK, I've been to festivals that had a bigger selection of beers, and breweries, maybe a wider array of beers sure. This festival however, had an awful lot of things that most others do not! Where do I begin???

OK, lets start from the beginning  My wife and it got there right about noon, when the gates opened. We grabbed our tickets, and waited in the line to get in. I have to say, I got a little nervous right off the bat when I saw the line to get in. It was long! As soon as we got in line, we started hearing people complaining about the line. Much to our relief, the line moved rather quickly, and we were standing in it for maybe 10 or 15 minutes, so, not bad at all. Besides, as my experiences with beer festivals, I figured waiting in line was something we should probably be ready to do a lot of this afternoon. Well, I was soon to learn, that the short, 10 minute wait to get it, was by far, the low point of the afternoon!
The stage

Upon walking in, we were handed our little (maybe) 4 oz topless tasting can, and "passport" with a map of the festival. There was a rather large crowd mingling right at the entrance, so we made our way through, walking down the sidewalk a couple of dozen yards, where the festival opened up into a large, grassy area with a little hill, circled by brewery and vendor tents, with a nice sort of pond/water feature in the middle of it, with a good size stage placed half over the water, where various bands played throughout the afternoon.
One of the first thing I said to my wife upon seeing this was "what a PERFECT spot for a beer festival!" It was green, and opened, with a ring of tree's circling it, provided a pretty decent amount of shade
for the brewer's and volunteers pouring samples for the thirsty masses. The weather didn't hurt matters either. Calling for a high of 92 that day, it couldn't have been much warmer then the high 80's when we got there, with a nice breeze blowing to help keep you cool(er). Really, you couldn't have designed a much nicer day for an outdoor festival.

We started making our way around to the various breweries, and were happy to find (or rather not find) any real lines at any of the tents. I never had to wait for more then 2 or 3 people to get my sample, and even got to stop and chat with a few of the brewer's and reps pouring as well. Everyone seemed to happy, and excited to be there, and were gracious, and accommodating to everyone that I saw. I was able to get about a dozen or so samples, all of beer I had never tried before, and in a few cases, never even heard of. All the beer was nice and cold when served. In a few cases, I walked around and let it warm a bit before drinking, but with the weather, and the sun, this only took a minute or so in those cases.

Beer for Brains
Me with James Swann

My wife and I were able to walk around, take in the sights, sounds and smells of the festival. Taking our time to chat with some friends and acquaintances we saw there. Got a chance to catch up with Louis from Beer for Brains. We ran into Brett Dettler of Arizona Wilderness Brewing. Of coarse, got to say a quick hello to James Swann as well, pouring beer for Mudshark, and as normal, he had a line of enthusiasts waiting to chat with Arizona's always friendly beer guru.

Santa Fe Brewing

Cigar City
We were lucky enough to meet some other folks there I had yet to meet. I finally got a chance to meet and chat with John "Hoppymoto" Alvarado, owner of Arizona Brewery Tours, someone I have been wanting to meet for a while now. If you get a chance, please check out his business, it looks awesome, and hope to join a tour here very soon, so I can give you a first hand account of it.
Marble Brewing, NM
Also, had a chance to meet and chat with the fine folks at Santa Fa Brewing, and Cigar City (FINALLY got a chance to try Jia Alai, fantastic!), and Marble Brewing.  I will add, I think the best beer I had on this great afternoon of great beer, was Golden Road's Wolf Among Weeds, a spectacular Imperial IPA that made me almost double take on my first sip!

What I love about beer festivals like this, is getting to chat with folks that make the beer, they obviously love it, and are passionate about it. Which is one of the reasons I love drinking local beer. You learn so much more from someone that got their hands dirty making the very beer you are drinking. I love this part of festival's like this the most!

I will say this again, this was a great festival! I still think maybe Arizona Strong Beer Festival might be the
The Beer Czar
best beer festival in Arizona. However, I can see the AmeriCAN Festival taking its place in the years to come. With the popularity and acceptance of canned beer in the craft beer community, and more and more breweries opening up each year, and canning their beers, there is no reason to believe that this festival can't continue to grow, and improve in the years to come. Let me also ad, while hard core beer folks love this festival,  I think this festival would be a great experience for anyone new to the beer community, or looking to get into it. Or even just those casual beer fans that like beer, like to try different beers and aren't afraid to branch out out a bit.

A hat tip to San Tan Brewery, and HDE Agency for putting on just a phenomenal festival. I am looking forward to next year already!!!

Well done, and thank you for giving Arizona one more reason to take pride in our beer community!

Until next time

***ANOTHER UPDATE***
According to their Facebook page (like it here...). They have set a date for an opening!!! They have yet to announce it, but believe, as soon as I know something, I will pass it along!

***UPDATE***

For those of you looking for recent news on the opening of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. They look to be shooting for a late July opening. Looks like one more major hurdle to jump (gas line inspection) and they will be able to start brewing.
For more info, Mouth by Southwest just did an update on them, you can check that out here....

No, below you can read about my visit to AWB last month, thank you.

OK, I may be beating a dead horse here I know, I keep talking about how the Arizona beer community seems to be growing and improving all the time. It seems a new brewery, or beer bar opens almost every month or so. Well, soon, we will have one more opening, right here in my lovely little town of Gilbert!!

Again, there have been a lot of brewery's opened in the last year here in the valley, but I have to say, I don't recall so much excitement and anticipation over a brewery in that time. I wasn't sure what it was at first, why was this little upstart brewery generating so much chatter and excitement, while others seem to just pop up with little fan fare surrounding them. Well, after meeting Jon (their Yeast Therapist) and Brett (aka Papa Brett) (and a little later, Patrick, aka "The Beardmaster") it is very easy to see why everyone seems to be so excited for them to open, and this is without ever having had a drop of their beer (yet)! These guys are excited, and passionate about their craft, and I bet
Barrels!!!

they will get you excited about it as well. They are already planning on doing a lot of things we don't see a lot of here, if at all, in Arizona. Jon was throwing around words like sours, barrel aged, Belgians, and a few others that got my attention. You get the impression that this isn't just a few guys that just decided to start a brewery one day, because its not. These guys have done their homework, and seem to be going about it in all the right ways (not that they haven't had a few road blocks along the way, anyone that follows their blog will know otherwise).

Growlers!
Hoping for a mid to late June start, it will be a "very soft opening" as Jon put it. Starting off with just beer, and maybe some limited kitchen offerings, working up to a full menu, and maybe even some additional bar offerings down the road a bit, as well as a pretty decent size patio area, which, seeing as they are opening in June, are not in a real hurry to get it ready just yet (if you've ever tried to sit out on a patio, in Arizona, in July, you would understand why).

The decor is, from what I could see, sort of a rustic, industrial. Dark hard woods, with rusted corrugated

roofing make up the bar (complete with purse hooks ladies!). I really love the fact that the fermenting tanks are opened to the dining area, not in a fish bowl like just about every other place. Set just to the right of the main doors, just a little pony wall separates the tanks from you as you walk in, something I've never seen before, but really like! Also, there is a "window" (about to be) cut in behind the bar to reveal the serving tanks. Another touch I really like, they plan on keeping the aging barrels in one corner of the dining area, along with some bags of grains as well, thus adding to the sort of rustic, industrial, yet very comfortable feel to the place.

The dining room is washed in natural lighting as well. As three of the four walls in the dining area are pretty much all glass. Jon even made mention of wishing he hadn't spend so much on lighting after seeing the natural light of the dining room. Natural green and a sort of rusty orange color paint covers the walls, as will some Arizona photography come opening time, and a few artistic accents are found as well.

I have been looking forward to their opening for some
time now, but like I said, since meeting them, I am really excited for it! Not just excited for them to open, I am excited for them, period. These guys are friendly, welcoming, very casual and relaxed, yet passionate about what they are undertaking, and I can't wait for them to be able to share that passion with all of us. If you get a chance, stop by, and take a look inside. I will let you all know when they annouce an opening date, so we can all head down there, and share a few pints!

Thanks again to Jon Buford, Brett Dettler, and Patrick Ware, for their time and hospitality, I look forward to having a pint with you guys very soon! Best of luck to you, cheers!

Until next time
