Big News from King James......

Cheers to you James!
Well, if you haven't heard by now, my friend James Swann, the east valley's Beer Guru, and Brew Bro's most "Beer-fluential" person in Arizona, has made a major announcement this morning.

The bad news, he is leaving his post as head beer guy at the much loved, very popular Watering Hole, inside Whole Foods in Chandler (much of its popularity, I would rest squarely on Jame's shoulders). The good news, he is leaving to open his very own craft beer bar and nano brewery!

I've been telling Mrs Czar for a while now "I can't wait for James to open his own place!", not knowing if he really had any plans to do so, just assuming he did.

James knowledge of beer is impressive, and his passion for it is infectious. Few people in Arizona have done as much as James to promote, and push the growth and maturity of the Copper State's beer community, and for that, I think we all owe Mr James a debt of gratitude.

James is keeping the details of his latest venture under wraps, although I did see on story that said it should be opened "this fall", and will be located somewhere in Chandler. He will release more details in a week or so, and rest assured, as soon as I find out more info, I will be passing it along.

Like James doesn't have enough on his plate already, he is also starting a new TV Show "Adventures in Brew", I've heard James call it a sort of a Top Gear style show, but replace the cars, with beers. I don't have any dates as to when it will air, or on what channel/network at this time, but I am working on it. In the mean time, check out his first promo video .....

This is all very exciting news, not just for James, but for all of us that benefit from his passion and enthusiasm for beer, especially local beer. Lets all wish James the best of luck, and do our best to support him in these projects. He has earned our respect, and deserves our support.

Cheer's to you James!

Happy IPA Day Arizona!!!

The day has arrived! Aug 1, 2013, National IPA Day! Head on out and indulge yourself in some hoppy goodness tonight. IPA's are arguably the most popular beer style out there today, so why not celebrate it! Plus, this IPA day is a pretty special one. Today, at 7 pm, there will be a simultaneous release of the much anticipated Wolf-pack Imperial IPA. If you follow this blog at all, you are well aware of Wolf-pack. A true collaboration of most of the valley beer bar's, to celebrate not only IPA, but the Arizona Beer community as a whole. It is an Imperial IPA, brewed with 4 types of hops, and agave nectar! This one clocks in at about 8.5% ABV, and 75 to 80 IBU's. If you would love to get your lips on a glass of this hoppy goodness, be at one of the follow bars by 7 pm.....

Drink local, its SO worth it!

OK, I know lately I've been on my proverbial soap box shouting the merits of drinking local beer. A response I get, from time to time (admittedly, and thankfully less and less these days), is that Arizona beer just isn't up to par with the likes of California, Oregon, or Michigan beers. OK, fair enough, we might not be "the best" beer state in the country (yet), does that mean we can't, or shouldn't love our local beers? My beloved Red Sox don't win the World Series every year, nor do my Patriots win the Super Bowl year after year (at least not anymore.....) yet, I still love them, even if they aren't "the best" team that particular year. Same goes with beer. We might not be the best, doesn't mean we don't have some great local beers at our disposal.

James, Greg, and Pat
There was no finer example of this recently  then at the weekly Whole Foods "Friday Night Beer Class" this passed week. James Swann had put together a line up of 4 "local" breweries. Not local as in the valley, but rather from "3 corners" of the state as they put it. Two brewery's from spring break capital of Arizona, Lake Havasu City, College Street Brewhouse, and Mudshark Brewery. Flagstaff's Mother Road Brewing Company, and Tucson's own Dragoon Brewing Company. Each Brewery bringing with them between 1 to 3 beers with them for us to sample.

First up, Keith from College Street  had 3 beers for us to try. First, Big Blue Van, an unfiltered Wheat Beer, with Vanilla and Blueberry. A refreshing, sweet and smooth beer, that should be a favorite of fans of good fruit beers. Next, he had their Spring Fling IPA. This was probably the closest thing I've had to a "session IPA" from Arizona, It was a crisp, refreshing IPA that has a light 5.5% abv. This would be a great IPA to have with dinner! Next was a very special beer, normally only available at the brew pub in Havasu. Keith brought a growler of Lamba Lamba Lambic! A wonderful, flavorful sour beer! I've said Arizona needs a good sour beer! Well, we have one!

The Czar, and Brandon from Mudshark

Next up, Brandon from Mudshark had just one beer for us. If you are only offering up one beer, better make it a good one! Well, he did! He had a barrel aged version of their Desert Magic. Their popular IPA, that has spent the last 6 months sleeping in a barrel. Awesome beer! A very smooth, balanced IPA, with a wonderful aroma! Very nice beer!

Pat pouring some samples
OK, I will admit, the one brewery I was most excited about trying was up next. I've been hearing a ton about Tucson's Dragoon Brewing Company. Hearing it called "Arizona's best new brewery" by more then a few folks who's opinion I trust. Pat was there from Dragoon, and brought with him a few great brews. First up, was their "Daisy", Dragoons take on a Berliner-weiss. This sort of hay-strew colored, tart, refreshing beer was very enjoyable, and one I could see myself enjoying about 3 or 4 more of! A low 4% abv, this is a beer that could be taken in large amounts! OK, I guess Arizona has at least 2 great sour beers!
Next up, Sarcosuchus, their double IPA. OK, for those of you that don't love cheesy Sci-Fi original movies like I do, this beer gets its name from the "supercroc" that prowled the swamps of the early Cretaceous Period, some 112 million years ago (give or take). Like the croc, this beer is an ass kicker! 6 different hops give this beer a huge flavor, and the 10.5% abv, well, that gives it the kick! They also brew this with local honey, I guess to try and soften up this powerful, reptilian beer. Very solid beer, I will seek this out again!

Love their logo!
Last, but certainly not least, Greg was there to offer up a few beers from Flagstaff's Mother Road Brewery. Greg brought 3 beers with him.and up first, was Euro-trash, their Belgian Pale brew. Very nice beer, with oddly, a hint of cinnamon?? Was that what I tasted?? Next up was a Rosemary infused brown ale (I didn't get the name of this one, I apologize). An interesting beer, that upon the very first sip, I though this would be a GREAT beer to marinade a steak it. Sort of a liquid post roast almost.
Last beer of the evening, was their 66 Chutes, a collaboration between Deschutes, and Mother Road. A bourbon barrel aged stout. Very nice, very drinkable stout, with nice hints of smokey wood.

All an all, a great showcase of some of just a few of the great beers Arizona now has to offer! I strongly
James, Keith and Brandon
recommend you seek out a few of these brews, or brewery's. Stop in, order a sampler of their stuff, and see what they have. I have no doubt, you will have some great beers, maybe even a new favorite. And don't forget, tell them The Beer Czar sent you!

And next time someone says to you "Arizona doesn't have any "great" beers" just reply to them;
"Really? Have you tried them all?" my guess is, no, not even close.

Time to play a little catch up.....this passed weeks events.

First off, let me start by apologizing to my readers. Nothing makes you realize how many people enjoy reading your blog then when you fail to update it for over a week! I thank you all that reached out to me to make sure all was "OK". Have no fear, I am just fine, albeit a tad busy. Between various beer events, my oldest daughters basketball schedule, and a job that seems to be expanding weekly, I have found myself with  very little time to write any updates, till now!!! So, here we go...

Great American BBQ and Beer Festival...
So good!!!
Let me start with the Great American BBQ and Beer Festival. Held back on March 23 in Historic Downtown Chandler. This event, put on by San Tan Brewery, was, shall I say, fairly awesome. To be clear, it was much more a BBQ festival then a beer festival, but that really isn't an issue here at all. San Tan was providing the beer, and just a TON of BBQ vendors took part in providing the food. My wife, and my oldest daughter and I made our way down there, had some AWESOME brisket from Up in Smoke BBQ. Enjoyed a Mr Pineapple and Sex Panther, and walked around, enjoyed the beautiful weather, checking out the sites and sounds and smells,
The weather was perfect!
and even got to say hello to my friends from Craft Brewed Clothing!! We went early, soon after the gates opened, so it wasn't too busy, but from some of the pictures I saw, it was packed later that evening, and for good reason. The sights, and smells of this festival were just amazing. Everyone was having fun, and were friendly, and polite. There was plenty to eat and drink (even for the kids) and lots to learn, and even some free swag to collect (I scored 3 free t-shirts!) A hat tip to San Tan Brewery and HDE Agency for putting on a spectacular event! Can't wait till next year!

Pitcher of Nectar Distributors Rare Beer Festival
Up next, was the Pitcher of Nectar Distributors Rare Beer Festival, held at Whole Foods. This festival, although small, had an amazing line up of beers! I got 15 tickets, and used each one on a beer I had never tried before, and in many cases, never even heard of! We spent a good 3+ hours making our way through the crowd, visiting with friends, making some new ones, and just having a great time doing it. Now, if I had one knock on this festival, is that it was a little starved for space.
Lots of beer lovers!
If you have ever been to The Watering Hole at Whole Foods, you know its not a huge place, and it seemed every beer lover in the east valley was filling the place up for this event. That being said, it didn't really detract from the event at all. I normally hate tight crowds. I get grumpy, and short tempered normally. Not this time. Maybe it was because of all the amazing beers to be had, or all the friendly beer lovers enjoying themselves, or our gracious host King James Swann, making the rounds making sure everyone was happy. Maybe it was all these things. It was a great event, and hope next year, you can procure a little more floor space (maybe even in the parking lot?), as I am sure there will be an even larger crowd next year.

Play Ball!!!!
This brings me to one of my favorite days of the year, Opening Day! As is my tradition, I attended the D-backs Opening Day with my mother, and her friend Andrea, and her husband Rich, as we have done for the last half dozen years or so.Growing up a huge fan of the sport, watching my beloved Red Sox every chance I could get, or playing in as many leagues as our short Maine summers would allowed, I have always loved the game of baseball. The fact that beer and baseball go hand in hand is just a glorious coincidence. Now, craft beer and baseball, well that is still a young relationship, but one that is maturing with each passing season. Currently, a majority of the beer available at most ballparks is comprised mainly of macro American lagers. However, if you know where to look, Chase Field, and other ballparks do offer a few tasty brews. A few Sam Adams seasonal are available, as is a few of Phoenix Ale Brewery's offerings. I enjoyed an $11 Cambleback IPA, while I watched as the D-backs raked up 15 hits, and 6 runs to win their 5th (?) straight opening day, this time against the Cardinals of St Louis.
On a side note, I was just reading that our beloved local brewery Four Peaks is in discussion with the D-Backs currently to provide their brews at Chase Field for next season, which would be WONDERFUL news if you ask me! I can see myself enjoying a Hop Knot while taking in a ball game!!!

OK, I promise, I will not take so long before I post again, as I have a list of things I want to write about, or share with you. Again, I appreciate those that showed concern in my absences, nice to know I have some faithful readers out there!

Thanks again, and until next time

Happy International Stout Day!!!

"King" James Swann
Well, its here again, Nov 8th, otherwise known as International Stout Day! And as is seemingly always the case, Mr James Swann (recently voted Arizona's most influential beer person) at the  "The Watering Hole" in the Whole Foods Chandler has a mighty impressive line up set to go tonight!

The festivities start at 6 (although, I would recommend getting there a little early if you want to sit, it fills up quickly) and goes till they kick you out. Stout drafts are $5 from 6 till close! So far, the tap list reads like some sort of "best of" stout list if you ask me, here is a look at whats on tap thus far.....

-Avery Czar

-Lips of Faith Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout
-North Coast Old Rasputin on Nitro
-Great Divide Yeti
-Sonoran Inebriator Stout
-Left Hand Milk Stout on Nitro
-Ska Mole Stout
-Oskar Blues 10 Fidy
-Moylan’s Ryan Sullivan’s Imperial Stout
-Stone Russian Imperial Stout
-Green Flash Double Cream Stout
-College Street Sweet Devil Stout
-Left Coast Barrel Aged Epitios
-Ballast Point Victory at Sea
-Port Old Viscosity
-Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout
-Bell's Expedition Stout

...with a note at the end "more to come....."

OK, if you can't find something to drink on this list, switch to wine!

I am going to try and put in an appearance this evening, but I am not sure my schedule will allow it. So, if you can, check it out. Last year, "The Watering Hole" was in the top 5 lists of most "check in's" on "Untapped" (like foursquare for beer geeks) in the nation, so please, if you can, help James and the crew at WF's maintain their prominent place at the top of our local beer scene, and head to "The Watering Hole" and have a glass or two of some amazing stouts!

Here is the Facebook events invite for you (click here)

And if you don't have the "Untapped" app, I suggest downloading it, its free, and a great way to not only track the beers you drink, but to share what you are drinking, and where you are drinking it with your friends.

If you can make it, by all means, let me know what you thought. And even if you can't make it, grab your favorite stout, and celebrate International Stout Day, 2012!!!

Until next time

The search (and wait) is over….

A few months back, I wrote about my seemingly never ending quest to get a glass of Dogfish Heads 120 Minute IPA on tap. We have tried on numerous occasions to make it to keg tapings of said beer, only to arrive a little late, and find the keg has been emptied (sometimes in just a matter of minutes). Why do you ask? Well, if you recall, I bestowed the virtues of this beer in a previous post (120 Minutes and a Hungry Monk), but to recap, what I said about it was…..

The Elusive 120 Minute
“Now, 120 Minute IPA is a pretty special, very unique beer. This is unlike any IPA I have ever had. To produce this beer, it is boiled for a full 2 hours (hence the 120 minute designation) while being continuously hopped throughout the entire boil. It is then dry hopped in the fermentor for a month, and if that wasn’t enough, it is then aged for an additional month with whole leaf hops.”

Now, due to cost, copious amounts of ingredients and the labor this beer requires, Dogfish Head does not produce much of this beer every year. Then, a few years back, due to quality control issues and problems with the yeast, the brewery was forced to dump a whole batch down the drain. This created somewhat of a shortage of this beer, and the problem with “beer people” is, when a beer because harder to find, it becomes more desirable. So, that lack of supply seems to over exaggerate demand, which, in all honesty, sort of adds to fun of it all. My wife and I have been on a search for this beer for the better part of the last few years, so you could imagine my elation when my co-worker Chris, came to me on Monday morning and told me they were not only tapping a keg of it at “"The Watering Hole"”, they would also be selling bottles of it as well!

Cheers! Toasting at The Watering Hole
So, we got ourselves a babysitter very last minute (Thank you Christi!) and made our way to Whole Foods to hope and pray we got there in time to get a glass. Well, lucky for me, my wife, my aforementioned co worker Chris and his girlfriend Julie were able to make it there before I could, and got a table, and waited in line for a glass of this liquid gold. The tapping commenced at 5:00 sharp, and the last drop was drained from said keg exactly 20 minutes later. Luckily, upon my arrival (about 5:15), I found my wife and friends waiting patiently at a table with 3 full glasses of 120 Minute! (Julie was not nearly as excited as we were for this beer, and instead opted for a glass of Dogfish Head’s Bitches Brew instead). So, with great anticipation, I raised my glass, took two quick sniffs, savoring the rich aroma of this beer, before putting the glass to my lips, and taking an intense, flavorful first sip…..

My empty glass of 120 Minute, and newly acquired bottle!
Now this is a pretty unique beer in all aspects. This beer drinks more like an after dinner liquor rather than a beer. Certainly not a beer you chug (at 18% abv, there is no need too!). It pours a rich, golden dark strew color, with a thin lacing of head rimming the glass. This is a surprisingly balanced beer for such a hop bomb. As you would expect, the character is made up chiefly of a strong, citrus hop character, however, there is a nice caramelly, almost molasses taste that lingers on your tongue for quite a while after you’ve taken your last sip. Again, this is not a beer you will sit down a throw 2 or 3 back. IN fact, I am not sure I could, or would even want to drink more than one of these gems at a time!

Line for CBS at Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, MI
Sometimes, the thrill of the “hunt and capture” (The Thrill of the Hunt) makes a beer far more enjoyable then you might normally find it. Now, this might very well be the case with 120 Minute, and if so, well, so be it. The thrill of finding and tasting a long sought after goal is very pleasing to anyone, and makes for a far more enjoyable experience, more so then if you could get this beer by the caseload at any Circle K or 7-11 for a few bucks. Maybe the $10 a bottle price tag (that’s for a 12 oz bottle btw) contributes to that well, but again, so what if it does. This is a spectacular beer in any case, and gives us beer geeks something to look forward to, and talk about. Like hunters around a campfire, we can now sit around our table at The Watering Hole, and tell stories of “that time” we stood in line for 25 minutes for a single glass of beer, and try and convince all the sceptics at the table how worth while it was, and how we would do it again tomorrow if we could, because, honestly, I would.

Arizona's Growing Craft Beer Scene...

This past Thursday, (Nov. 3rd) was the first annual International Stout Day. One of the local establishments I have written about recently, "The Watering Hole", at Whole Foods, was very involved. They had an amazing line up of stouts to offer, and they were promoting it heavily on various social networks. Sadly, due to last minute babysitter complications, I was unable to attend, but I did know a few that did, and from what I heard, not only was the line up of stouts amazing, but the turn was amazing as well. Proof of this? A beer blog "Untapped" tracked "check in's" around the country, and I am happy to report, "The Water Hole" ranked 3rd in the country for total check ins. Also, coming in 5th was Trophy's Steakhouse in Queen Creek, AZ. Oddly, I live right in between both these places! Location, Location, Location! (Trophy's is less than 2 miles from my house!). I just wanted to take a moment and say congrats to James Swann and the crew at Whole Foods for what I hear was a fabulous event, and thanks for being such an advocate for the growing Arizona Beer scene!!!

List of top 5 check ins
1. Lizardville - Bedford, OH
2. The Flying Saucer - Kansas City, MO
3. "The Watering Hole" - Chandler, AZ
4. "The Flying Saucer" - Austin, TX
5. Trophy's Steakhouse - Queen Creek, AZ
